I saw Nine yesterday, and I have some thoughts on it, but let me just start with this one while it’s fresh: yes, Kate Hudson’s performance is embarrassing. The reviews are right. That’s because Kate Hudson’s character is embarrassing. THE POINT is that she’s an idiot, and if I were Hudson, I think I would be proud of making her look as stupid as she does.
I could write a whole post on this if I had time, but basically Guido asks her what his films are about and she goes, “You know, the modern age and the death of religion,” and he says, “Religion isn’t dead.” And then she dances around singing nonsense about neo-realism, haireographing it up because she can’t dance, talking his “P-O-V” and “angles wide and tight” and Italian style, and it’s all making fun of how fandom gets to be its own kind of creation that survives on tassles and glitter and worship, and honestly, I think it’s meant to be just a big joke on America. I totally laughed.
